Sleep Apnea and Symptoms That Prove You Have It
There are conditions that we live with for a long time and walk around not realizing that we have them. It is almost funny how we accept some health disorders and count them as normal when really, they are not supposed to be. One of these disorders is the infamous sleep apnea that affects a large population of the adults in the world today. While most people recognize this as a disorder, they don’t really realize its implications and the underlying health issues that it signifies. This disorder manifests in the form of frequent pauses and breaks in breathing during sleep. These breaks have various causes, the first one being a miscommunication between the respiratory system and the brain. This happens in this way; when the respiratory system fails to send breath signals to the brain, a pause in breathing is caused. Physical blockages that interrupt breath also explain these breaks in breathing. For example, the tongue can collapse in the airway and therefore obstruct proper breathing. This is one of the most common causes for this disorder and explains 85% of all the occurrences of sleep apnea.
This is a disorder that people hardly notice because mostly it manifests when they are asleep. There are however other symptoms that are experienced while awake that may signify the presence of this disorder. Extreme mood swings are the first of these symptoms. People tend to get moody when they’ve not had enough sleep and since sleep apnea affects the quality of sleep, it explains the moodiness. Symptoms like short temper, irritability and moodiness points towards the presence of this disorder. Moreover, sleep is now also causing high blood pressure which is also explained by the lack of quality sleep. In this case, during the breaks where you’re not breathing, the brain does not receive enough oxygen and the response of the body is to increase blood pressure.
Waking up with headaches is also another common symptom of sleep apnea. This is a symptom that is closely related to the brain not receiving enough oxygen and the pressure in blood vessels increasing. This increased pressure and blood vessels and the causing vascular headaches. Other than these, obesity and being overweight also contributes to this sleep disorder mostly because of fat buildup in the throat area that ends up obstructing proper breathing. These are both symptoms and also causes of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can be cured by is the solutions like losing weight along with other treatments.
